Bolingbrook Water Heater Repair: Water Heater Rumbling

Your water heater has to deal with many thousands of gallons of water. Rumbling can be caused by a couple different issues.

  • Sediment – If your home’s water supply has sediment in it, possibly from a leak or just because of the he water composition in your area, it could start to gather in the bottom of your water heater. This layer of sediment can form a barrier on the bottom of your water heater. As the burner heats the base of your water heater, water bubbles can form in the sediment and cause rumbling.
  • Minerals – If your home has hard water it means that there are excess minerals in the water like calcium and magnesium. These minerals often get deposited on the bottom of your water heater in the form of limescale. Water that gets trapped below this limescale can cause rumbling in your water heater.
  • Cold water – Normally, your water heater will deposit cold water to the bottom of the water heater. However, if the dip tube that brings in that cold water to the bottom comes loose, then cold water will come in right at the top which can cause rumbling.

What to Do If Your Water Heater Rumbles

If you notice that your water heater is rumbling you should call for water heater repair. Your plumber will likely drain the water heater in order to remove the sediment or minerals and to repair the dip tube.
