How Frequently Should Refrigerant Be Recharged?

Never. If your air conditioner is functioning properly, there is no need to recharge your refrigerant. As you’ll learn about a bit more in the following post, there is no point during the cooling process or the refrigerant cycle in which refrigerant is consumed. This means that a low refrigerant level is indicative of a problem. Either your system was insufficiently charged to begin with, meaning that it has never functioned at peak performance or efficiency levels, or that you have a refrigerant leak in your system. Either way, you need trained professionals to resolve the problem. Schedule your air conditioner services in Bolingbrook, IL with our team.

What Refrigerant Does, and Why Leaks Are of Real Concern

Some people don’t have any idea how it is that their air conditioners operate. Air conditioners do not generate cool air out of nothing. Instead, they utilize the refrigerant cycle in order to remove heat from the air that is already in the house. In the evaporator coil — which is very appropriately named — refrigerant is evaporated. This allows it to draw heat out of the air surrounding the coil in the process. The refrigerant then travels to the outdoor condenser, where it is condensed and sheds its heat.

Now, if you do not have enough refrigerant in your air conditioning system, your AC is not going to successfully remove heat from the air. The coil can get too cold, causing ice to develop, and this only serves to insulate the coil further. You put your compressor at risk of overheating or failing, and you are going to pay more for a lesser cooling performance. You deserve better than this, which is why you must know for certain that you have the right amount of refrigerant in your air conditioning system.
