Why Might an Air Conditioner Blow Warm Air?

We may be approaching the end of the cooling season, slowly but surely, but that doesn’t mean that you can afford to begin ignoring signs of trouble with your system. If you really want to protect your comfort throughout the remainder of the summer, as well as the overall condition of your air conditioner, you need to have any issues with your system resolved as soon as possible. One of the most problematic is hot air coming from your AC in Bolingbrook, IL.

Your air conditioner has one job and one job only, and that is to cool your home. If unable to do this, then your air conditioner is nothing more than a very large, overpriced fan. There are a few different reasons as to why your air conditioner may be blowing warm air and leaving your living space only marginally more comfortable than the outdoors.

A dirty air filter could actually be to blame, and this is among the simplest of problems to resolve. When you have a very dirty air filter, the airflow throughout your cooling system is reduced. Because an air conditioner cools your home by removing heat from the air therein, this is very problematic. The evaporator coil may get too cold, which can cause ice to form on it as condensation freezes. This insulates the coil, and sends the system on a downward spiral – along with your comfort.

You may also be dealing with an issue as simple as an improperly set thermostat. Perhaps you accidentally set the temperature too high, or switched your heat pump over to the heating mode unintentionally. Either way, you can fix the issue on your own. If your thermostat is actually malfunctioning, though, a professional will have to repair or replace it.

The most serious problem that you may be dealing with here is a refrigerant leak. If there is not enough refrigerant in your system, then that system is not going to be able to cool the air as effectively as it ought to. Refrigerant is evaporated to absorb heat from the air, after all, and the heat transfer process will be greatly compromised if low levels are an issue. Plus, the aforementioned icing of the coil may develop in this case, as well.
